Episode 9 – Cucuteni Museum

The Cucuteni Eneolithic Art Museum, opened in a beautiful building within the Princely Court in Piatra Neamț, built around 1930 by the contractor Carol Zani to a design by the capital’s former chief architect, Roger Bolomey, houses the most varied and extensive collection in Europe. It stands out for its valuable objects and painted ceramic vessels—monochrome, bichrome or trichrome—with elegant shapes and refined decoration, providing a comprehensive picture of the decorative and figurative art belonging to the most important Eneolithic culture of southeastern Europe, the “Precucuteni – Cucuteni” culture.

Dating from 3600–2600 BCE and comprising about 800 items, most classified as treasures, the collection includes objects of inestimable value: “Vasul cu colonete”, “Hora de la Frumușica”, “Vas de tip horă”, the statuettes from the group “Soborul zeițelor” and “Gânditorul de la Târpești” are just a few of them. Considered the highest achievement of Eneolithic Europe, the pottery of the Cucuteni culture reaches perfection through its decorative motifs, predominantly spirals, painted with natural pigments and, according to researchers, often even with the artist’s own blood.

The museum’s opening hours are 9:00 – 17:00 (October to March). It is closed on Mondays.

The admission fee for pupils, students and military personnel is 2 lei, for adults, individually or in groups it is 4 lei. The photography or filming fee is 10 lei.
