The G.T. Kirileanu County Library Neamț is taking registrations for the CODE Kids club, aimed at children aged 10 to 14, which will continue operating until February 2025 inclusive.

Registrations are free at the Community Information Centre of the County Library (phone 023-211.524, extension 107, email euro_cic2008@yahoo.com), and meetings will take place each Wednesday from 14:00 to 16:00.

In these clubs, children learn programming through a well-structured two-year programme, starting at beginner level and then advancing, carrying out Coding activities – basic programming from scratch, Arduino – robotics and technology, Creation – IT projects, phone applications, video editing, games, animation, Soft skills – numerous online webinars on soft skills and in-person training in clubs, and Practical activities – construction projects (bridges, models, etc.) and other activities to develop digital competences through technological projects.

The programme’s activities are delivered using solid written materials as well as video tutorials, prepared and made available periodically by the CODE Kids technical team.

The CODE Kids project is carried out in partnership with the Progress Foundation and is offered to children, helping them look confidently to the future, with the certainty that they will be among the fortunate ones who will find employment and have a chance at prosperity. The units hosting these clubs nationwide are listed among the Progress Foundation’s collaborators, which each year seeks to obtain the IT equipment needed for activities (computers, laptops, tablets, etc.) according to the sponsorships received.

Programming is an essential skill for a child preparing to enter the labour market in the coming decade. Studies by Oxford University and the World Economic Forum state that technology will profoundly affect how work is performed in the future and which types of skills or sectors will be favoured, as a result of a massive wave of robotisation and automation.

**About CODE Kids**

Since 2017 the Progress Foundation has initiated, piloted and refined programming education for children aged 10-14 in rural areas, using public libraries as learning spaces and public librarians as learning facilitators. The methodology is based on the fundamental research of Sugata Mitra – the SOLE model (Self-Organising Learning Environment), also known as the Cloud School model.

In 2023 alone, the Progress Foundation coordinated 227 active coding clubs in public libraries, schools or NGO offices in rural communities and small towns, across 40 counties, with 30 of the clubs in the Republic of Moldova. From the start of the programme up to the present, approximately 10,000 children have learned the basics of programming and gained STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) competences there, at two educational levels: beginner and advanced.

Children in the beginner clubs succeed in completing the main CODE Kids activities at a rate of 80%. Consequently, the top 10 children wrote over 50,000 lines of code in recent years. Children in the advanced groups work on Scratch, Arduino and AppInventor applications.
