The earliest documents concerning the founding of the settlement of Tazlău are linked to the construction of [**Tazlău Monastery**](https://neamt.tesseramo.com/articole/manastirea-tazlau-judetul-neamt) between 1496 and 1497 by Stephen the Great. At that time Tazlău was shown on the map of Moldavia as a forested area with a monastery. The village emerged and developed much later, in several stages. Almost forgotten by history, tucked away in a secluded part of the forest, the village is renowned for its skilled householders and house builders.

The depression is a natural oasis, traversed by the Tazlău River, which receives water flowing down from the surrounding hills. The village elders have long regarded the waters of the Tazlău as a gift to the village. Beside the river rises “Măgura Tazlăului”, where a cluster of large rocks was named “Masa lui Stefan Vodă” by the ancestors. From there, the ruler shot an arrow to determine the site of the altar of Tazlău Monastery.

Also in Tazlău is the [**memorial house of the renowned physician and writer I. I. Mironescu**](https://neamt.tesseramo.com/articole/casa-memoriala-i-i-mironescu-tazlau), whose displays aim to recreate a glimpse of interwar life in Tazlău. Over time, many cultural activities have taken place here, also attended by Mihail Sadoveanu, who delighted listeners with his hunting stories. In the novella “Intr-un colț de rai”, Mironescu describes the monastery and the monastic cells where many Moldavian dignitaries wept, then rejoiced again.

### Visit the Tazlău area, Neamț County

In this area, you can visit old villages of freeholding peasants, where [**traditions are still held in high regard**](https://neamt.tesseramo.com/articole/repere-etnografice-in-zona-tazlau). The most widespread craft in the Tazlău Valley is carpentry. Here, “corner cupboards, plate racks and benches” have been replaced by cupboards and sofas, tables and chairs, beautifully sanded, carved and finished, made from fir, cherry or oak.

All these aspects make the Tazlău Valley an undeniable cultural reality, proof that people make a place special. It is an ideal area for hiking, and tourists who come to these lands will be able to enjoy them fully.
