The birthplace of philosopher Vasile Conta (1845–1882), 11 km south of Târgu Neamț, was opened as a memorial museum in 1993.
Conta, a classmate of Ion Creangă and friend of Mihai Eminescu, was the first Romanian philosopher to build an original philosophical system; he was a professor at Iași University and Minister of Education. The exhibition covers his life and work alongside local history, ethnography and folk art from the Bălțătești area.
