Medieval monument of exceptional historical value, Neamț Fortress is situated in the proximity of the highest altitude of Pleșu Peak. Watching over the valleys of Moldavia and Siret rivers, as well as over the access road to Transylvania, Neamț Fortress has gone through many sieges and stands as a testimony of the historical turmoil which marked Moldavia during the Middle Ages.

Comissioned by Petru I Mușat (1374-1391), the fortress reached its full glory during the reign of Stephen the Great (1457-1504), due to numerous works of extension and consolidation. The edifice was declared a historic monument in 1866. The latest rehabilitation interventions on the building, carried out before 2009 and funded under the PHARE Program, have changed the look of the fortress, highlighting its magnificence and its tumultuous past, now presented to the public in an attractive manner.

The Medieval Festival ”Days of Neamț Fortress” takes place every year in Târgu Neamț, in Neamț County, between late June and early July. The event proposes an extremely diverse program: from medieval music performances, combat demonstrations in clothing of the epoch and parades with princesses and knights in medieval musical accords to folk art exhibitions, a popular culinary festival – “The Enchanted Pot” and various folk music and dances. The evenings end with an impressiveknight camp fire, departing from which the participants go to their houses holding lit torches in their hands.

Every year, the festival impresses its attendants through originality, authentic Romanian traditions and especially through creating the medieval atmosphere that takes the visitors back in time, in ages of great historical significance.
